There is still confusion about the distinction between summative and formative assessment (Rawling 2000). In schools, alongside the development of levelled assessments, there is some evidence of levelled marking of pupil work, although some geographers question the latter’s use (see Lambert and Balderstone 2000). While any individual piece of work cannot possibly satisfy the range or variety of scale indicated in the complete level description, some departments mark work as indicative of working around a particular level.
